Shantaram Review on BlackMzungu
“It is everything you can think of for lack of a better description. Think love, think murder, did you just mention war? Or was it physics and philosophy? It’s all covered in this wonderful collection of words called Shantaram!” ~ Alulu~
At least that’s how I described it at the last book swap event I attended recently.
Turns out that I never read the prologue or reviews of books until after I’m done reading the book. You can, therefore, imagine the shock and admiration in my eyes when after a year of reading Shantaram, I finally discover that most of these “fictional” characters that I’d slowly fallen in love with, page after page, were actually based on real-life events!
The best part about this novel is how the story manages to spurn through different scenes, times, genres and feeling while maintaining a simple, easy to follow style.
And did I mention how relatable the book is?
After reading this, there’s definitely no way you’d not want to visit India, if not to witness the parades, to smoke some chalum with the standing babas, then to find out first hand if the mind freeing experiences explained herein are true.
Packing my bags soon…
(Update: Actually published, 2 months after writing it & guess where I am… India!!!!) Lol
